Read First

READ THIS FIRST IF YOU ARE TEACHING THE PRINT EDITION of READER’s Choice 6!

CORRECTIONS!

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 6th edition of Reader’s Choice. In the brave new world of publishing print and e-books, a manuscript passes through countless hands in a dizzying number of locations on its journey to publication.  We don’t know which gremlins along the way contributed the following infelicities, but you will want to know about these before you begin teaching the first printing of RC6 (these have already been addressed in the eBook ).

First and foremost:

  1. 2-5. Unit 1 introduces foundational strategies for efficient reading: skimming, scanning, reading for thorough comprehension, and critical reading. Students need to be introduced to these approaches before being asked to practice them.  Please note that scanning is introduced on page 5, next to the infographic on pages 4-5.  It is important for students to begin with the introduction to scanning on page 5 before they answer the scanning questions on the top of page 3.
  2. 97-99. The Comprehension questions on page 97 refer to the infographic on pages 98-99. It is important that students do the “Getting Oriented” activity on page 98 before they begin answering the Comprehension questions on page 97.

Other corrections (these will make teaching easier when you get to these pages!)

  1. 97. Comprehension Question 6 should read: “Between 1975 and 2022” (NOT 2009).
  2. 178: The Figure 2 caption should read “Line plot of global mean land-ocean temperature index, 1850 to 2010(NOT 1880 to present).

Also:

  1. 73, Vocabulary from Context Question 16. imposed should be italicized.
  2. 116, Vocabulary from Context Question 11. Should read odds are (11) NOT odds (11) are.
  3. 121, Vocabulary from Context. Next to line 4, predisposed should be italicized.
  4. 159, Vocabulary from Context Question 3. Should read focused on (3) NOT focused (3) on.
  5. 192, Vocabulary from Context Question 9. Should read mortal wound (9) NOT mortal wound (9).

We hope you enjoy using the book!
